Difficulty level and frequency of exams per sem:
English (Hons) demands a student to do a wide range of reading. Though the genaral assumption is that the subject is all about plays, poems and novels a la, but in reality, one studies a lot of essays and prose from subjects like psychology, sociology, histroy, linguistics etc. One must have a strong background in the Hist of British Literature from Anglo-Saxon period or 6th century till the contemporary literature. Besides, one studies optionals like Greek Literature, Indain Lieterature- both english as well as the various translations including the Sanskrit, and post-colonial literature such as that of America, Canada, African etc. Many people after 12 standard opt for this subject as there is an awe and luxury associated with the subject (because of English langauge and not the literature) albeit they think it is of less significance. But, hardly people do pass with a 1st div in this subject in graduation at least in DU. It is because the english we study till 12 standard are just to make us familiar with the most popular international language called "english"; how to read, write and speak it properly. But, English Hons as a subject is not about the same purpose. I agree this subject enhances one's fluency in english but the subject is all about literature whether english or any other. I think a genuine english hon student will definitely see literature of evry damn langauge including the oral literature on par. Literature is a strong ideological vehicle where the dominant class/group say the state, imposes their values and ideas. Paradoxically, when we read literature we can eithr uphold or subvert the dominant ideology. That is why, one must have strong foundation in myriad fields like Marxism, Feminism, Post Structuralism, Cultural Studies and Post Colonialism if he/she wants to specialise in English Hon. Above all, since the subject involves a lot of writing and a good presentation, so one must have a good writing skill and familiar with grammar and diction like every other liberal art requires. I have seen many people including Manipuris who score high in 12, but have opted for English Hon by default. But many of them end up managing a 3rd/2nd division. If they have opted for a scsience/arts/commerce or other technical subjects they cud have passed out with a higher percentage and can sit for the variosu PG and entrence exams. Lack of proper guidance and knowlegde about the subject puts many a lives at stake. They become frustrated and blame the subject. I have done my BA English Hon from DU and currently pursuing MA English from the same. I am sure the above few lines could serve a bit to those english hons aspirants, both the genuine as well as the wannabees. And, of course, it will be able to break many myths about the subject and popularise the subject in a great way.
Administration & management of the institution:Efficient
Hostel facilities:Not Available
Mess facilities & food quality:
The college canteen is not so good though diffrent cuisines- North India, South Indian, Chinese are available.
Accommodation details (in case if there is no hostel facility):
I have stayed in a rented accomodation nearby the college with my freinds. It was not a pleasant experience in the beginning since my roomies were not my types; I mean, not interested in studies but just drugs, booze and sleaze only. Later, I stayed with like minded ppl and then had a good time there. I think after leavin home, I have learnt a lot of things which my 3 years stay had taught me. Sometimes, it was tiring but the fun quotient was quite high.
Proximity of hostel room from college lecture hall:Near
Location | Ease of communication & transportation:
Nehru Nager, near Ring Road. One can reach the college because of it's proper location.
Extracurricular Activities: Sports, Functions & ceremonies (optional):
Like every DU college, the college holds many events in a year and the English Department has 3 events a year which comprises of inter college competition, seminars, film festivals etc. Eminent people are invited.
Best thing about the college/ Do's and Don'ts / Any other comments /:
The college has a big campus and playing ground. The class rooms are big and spacious. The faculty is quite good. Moreover, it has a big well equipped library with e-learning facilities. However, the college has no hostel till now which am sure is comin up soon.
Present company / college:Masters in English as well as a freelancer.
